E01.02Neuropathophysiology and clinical treatment of Tourette Syndrome
Tic disorders, including Tourette Syndrome, are neurodevelopmental conditions characterised by the presence of involuntary motor movements and/or vocalisations, commonly referred to as tics. Despite their often early onset and fluctuating course, tic disorders remain insufficiently recognised and are frequently associated with significant psychiatric comorbidity.
In this educational update, Juan Carlos Baldermann will provide an overview of the phenomenological and clinical characteristics of tic disorders and discuss recent advances in the understanding of their underlying neurobiology. Particular attention will be given to current models of network dysfunction and their implications for the pathophysiology of tics.
The lecture will conclude with an overview of current treatment approaches, including behavioural therapy, pharmacological strategies and emerging neuromodulatory interventions. Recent developments in these fields and their implications for clinical practice will be highlighted.
