Tourettes in childhood: important considerations in diagnosis

Tammy Hedderly — ELCH- GSTT AND KCL LONDON UK, PAEDIATRIC NEUROSCIENCES, LONDON, United Kingdom

Dr Hedderly is a children’s Neurologist specialising in movement disorders. This lecture will highlight key challenges in the diagnosis and management of paediatric tic disorders and Tourette syndrome (1). She will highlight some novel work around phenomenology and aspects that have been underexplored such as impact of misophonia and misokinesia in exacerbating childhood tics (2). Using some clinical case examples there will be a section on important differentials in childhood such as complex motor stereotypies and the link with intense imagery and maladaptive daydreaming (3). There will then be a final exploration of what is currently known around the adolescent outbreak of functional tic like behaviours (4) with an important glimpse at some recent lived experience, thematic analysis work from the teenagers and young people affected by the functional tics (5)
