Parenthood and academic careers: navigating leadership and life transitions in research.

Balancing parenthood with an academic career remains a significant challenge for many researchers, particularly during early and mid-career stages when expectations for productivity, mobility, and leadership rapidly increase. Parenthood often coincides with critical career transitions such as establishing independence, securing funding, building research teams, and taking on leadership responsibilities. This presentation will explore how parenthood intersects with academic career development, with a focus on early-career researchers who are navigating leadership roles and wondering how this will coincide with family responsibilities.

Parenthood does not affect academic careers equally. Research shows that while mothers often experience a temporary decline in research productivity following childbirth, fathers frequently maintain or even increase productivity, a phenomenon sometimes described as the “fatherhood premium.” These patterns highlight how structural factors, including gendered divisions of caregiving and workplace expectations, can shape career trajectories in academia and underscore the importance of leadership practices that actively support researchers navigating motherhood.

Drawing on emerging evidence and lived experiences, the discussion will address key challenges including parental leave, the impact of pregnancy and postpartum transitions on cognitive and emotional functioning, time constraints, and persistent structural and cultural gender biases.

The discussion will also highlight strategies that support sustainable career progression for researchers with children. Particular attention will be given to how early-career leaders can foster inclusive lab cultures that support both their own parenting journeys and those of their team members.
