“Dr., why did you prescribe me an antipsychotic for my depression? Are you sure that’s the right call?”
Neuroscience-based Nomenclature: Rethinking How We Talk About Psychotropics
Neuroscience-based Nomenclature (NbN) is a pharmacologically-driven alternative to traditional, indication-based classification of psychotropics—shifting the focus from what a drug is called to what it actually does. Instead of “antidepressant” or “antipsychotic,” we can think in terms of dopamine blockers, monoamine enhancers, and other pharmacological mechanisms. The NbN “language” aims to sharpen our clinical toolbox: choosing the next pharmacological step, articulating the rationale behind a treatment choice, and potentially reduce the stigma attached to diagnostic labels. This Campfire will explore how NbN can be brought into everyday clinical decision-making, including some of the less obvious nuances of dose, pharmacological profile, and clinical effect. We will also look at an exciting new dimension: how AI can complement and extend the existing NbN tools, opening new possibilities for translating complex pharmacology into practical treatment decisions.
The NbN Taskforce brings together leading psychopharmacologists from the major international CNS pharmacological organizations: ECNP, CINP, ACNP, AsCNP, and IUPHAR. The session will be hosted by Prof. Joseph Zohar, Chair of the NbN Taskforce, and moderated by Dr. Sasson Zemach, Taskforce member.
