ONE EXPERT BY EXPERIENCE JOURNEY

George McAllister — Bipolar Action Network

Living with bipolar disorder has shaped my life in ways I never expected. My days have often swung between deep, immobilizing lows and bursts of energy and confidence that felt unstoppable—until they weren’t. For years, I struggled to understand why my emotions shifted so sharply and why my thoughts raced at one moment and slowed to a crawl the next. Coming to terms with the diagnosis was both a relief and a reckoning. Learning to manage bipolar disorder has been a gradual process of self-discovery: recognizing triggers, accepting my limits, and finding treatment that actually helps. Medication, therapy, and support from the people in my life have slowly become anchors. Even so, the disorder remains a daily companion—sometimes quiet, sometimes demanding attention. While the challenges are real, this journey has also taught me resilience, selfawareness, and a deeper compassion for myself. I continue to navigate the highs and lows, working toward stability and embracing the small victories that remind me that living with bipolar disorder is not just about surviving—it’s about learning who I am and how I want to move through the world.
