THE EVOLVING NATURE OF ACADEMIC-INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS

Mark Rapaport — American Psyciatric Association

The intent of this presentation is to discuss the evolving nature of academic-industry partnerships. This evolution reflects the impact of technological advances on the types of investigations being performed in Psyciatry and mental health. In the 1980s and 1990s these partnerships usually involved investigators serving as sites for trials of new medications, investigator initiated trials usually involving a company’s compound, or serving on an expert panel to inform the research direction of a company. With the advent of cloud computing, digital health, machine learning, the electronic medical record, and AI, as well as advances in the development of multi-modal platforms, the relationships between academia and industry have become much more varied and complex. It is leading to new forms of partnerships with networks of academic sites, with at times multi-industry partners working together with academia on projects. As part of the workshop I will discuss a number of these types of partnerships and their implication for young and mid-career investigators.
